It’s still the most complete source for movies today. The book should improve its actors list the one fault I have with it.
Rating: 4 / 5
I am an independent producer/writer and whenever I need to look up
information on a film, I always turn to Leonard Maltin’s guide. As
far as I am concerned, he is the only critic that really knows his
stuff. I get the impression that not only does he really know movies,
he loves movies. This makes a big difference from the sour grapes
reviews that you get from other so called reviewers who are mainly
failed writers or just jealous of anyone that succeeds.
If you want a good solid review, you go to Leonard.

Now I’m not talking about the book, the book is fine. I’m talking about the critic overall: he’s such a jerk. I mean he gave First Blood (1982) & Rambo (2008) *1/2 stars and he gave Rambo III **1/2, seriously? What was wrong with First Blood and Rambo? And he literally gives everything **1/2 stars and I mean everything. . .
Batman (1989)
Batman & Robin (1997)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Forrest Gump (1994)
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
Rambo III (1988)
Meet the Parents (2000)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Open Season (2006)
Night at the Museum (2006)
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Pinapple Express (2008)
Spiderman (2002)
Shrek 2 (2004)
Transformers (2007)
Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Harry Potter 1 & 2 (2001-2002)
Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
Son of Kong (1933)
Monster House (2006)
And the list goes on. . .
And, I’m really not kidding, he gave The Dark Knight ** stars >:O
I mean good god! He thought Batman & Robin, one of the worst movies ever made thought it was better than the biggest Blockbuster of 2008, wow, you’ve gotta suck pretty hard to do that. He said Ledger’s role as the Joker was “So sick it’s hard to develope any pleasure from watching him,” seriously, what is he a girl? Actully, he his. . . I’ve looked at every one of the chick flicks from Woody Allen and he gave them all **** xD!!! He also gave Batman & Robin the same as the Shawshank Redemption. . . :0. . . go to your room, Mr!!! He also gave the first Gremlins ** and the second one ***, only because he was in it!!! Well, that’s about all I have to say, overall I hate Leonard Maltin! He has the worst opinions ever!!!

This book is an absolute MUST HAVE for any serious movie fan or for those wanting to know the basics of a film. Maltin provides the essential info — title, cast, director, and brief plot — but also adds a personal note which makes the mini-reviews more interesting and colorful. The volume is updated every year which is an amazing task in itself considering the vast number of new movies, both theatrical and TV, released every year. Maltin is a devoted movie fan himself, so the book is compiled with both scholarship and love.

We buy a new edition every year and use it faithfully. Wouldn’t know what to choose on television without it. Reviews are honest and most helpful.
